Frequently Asked Questions
What is the I Ching?
The I Ching (Book of Changes) is an ancient Chinese divination text and one of the oldest books in human history, dating back over 3,000 years. It consists of 64 hexagrams, each made of six lines that are either broken (yin) or unbroken (yang). The I Ching is consulted for wisdom and guidance by casting a hexagram that reflects the current situation and its potential evolution.
How does the three-coin method work?
Three coins are tossed six times to build a hexagram from bottom to top. Each toss produces a line value: heads counts as 3, tails as 2. The sum determines the line type. 6 (old yin) and 9 (old yang) are changing lines that transform into their opposite, creating a second "resulting" hexagram. 7 (young yang) and 8 (young yin) are stable lines.
What are changing lines in the I Ching?
Changing lines are lines that are in the process of transforming from yin to yang or vice versa. Old yin (6) changes to yang, and old yang (9) changes to yin. These changing lines have their own specific texts and carry special significance. When present, they produce a second "resulting" hexagram showing how the situation will evolve.
