Frequently Asked Questions
What is Chandra Lagna in Vedic astrology?
Chandra Lagna is a Vedic astrology chart view where the rashi (sign) occupied by the Moon at birth is treated as the 1st house, instead of the birth ascendant. All other planets are then read from the Moon, one rashi per house, in zodiac order. It is also called the Moon chart or Chandra Kundali. Jyotish uses it to study emotional and mental life patterns.
What is the difference between Chandra Lagna and Lagna (Janma Lagna)?
Janma Lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth and is used for the main birth chart. Chandra Lagna is the rashi occupied by the Moon at birth and is used as an alternate 1st house. In Jyotish both are read together. A yoga (planetary combination) is considered strong when it forms from both the Janma Lagna and the Chandra Lagna.
How is Chandra Lagna calculated?
First, the sidereal longitude of the Moon is calculated using Lahiri ayanamsha. The rashi the Moon occupies becomes the Chandra Lagna and is treated as house 1. The next rashi in zodiac order becomes house 2, the one after becomes house 3, and so on through all 12 houses. Each planet is then relocated to the house that contains its own rashi in this rotated view. This is whole sign house counting from the Moon.
Why do Vedic astrologers read charts from Chandra Lagna?
Parashari Jyotish explicitly advises reading every chart from three reference points: Lagna, Chandra Lagna, and Surya Lagna. The Moon represents the mind and emotions, so reading houses from the Moon isolates mental and emotional patterns. Transit predictions (gochara) are almost always measured from Chandra Lagna in traditional practice. If a yoga or dasha phalita is visible from both Lagna and Chandra Lagna, Jyotish treats it as confirmed and likely to manifest.
Which ayanamsha and house system does this calculator use?
This Chandra Lagna calculator uses Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha, the official standard adopted by the Indian government for all Vedic almanacs and panchangams. Houses use the whole sign system, which is the classical Jyotish convention where each rashi equals exactly one house. Calculations use Roxy Ephemeris, verified against NASA JPL Horizons, so results match authoritative Jyotish sources.
